Breast augmentation is the most popular cosmetic surgery in the U.S. today. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), more than 300,000 breast augmentation procedures were performed in a recent year, most of which were surgeries to place breast implants.

However, some women who have breast implant surgery find that they need (or want) to have their implants removed later. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reports that breast implant removal procedures were performed 28,467 times in a recent year.

Dr. Hilton Becker is a board-certified plastic surgeon with a background in reconstruction and wound healing. He is also a pioneer in breast implants and breast reconstruction. With his training, experience, and commitment to patient care, Dr. Becker performs breast implant removal in Florida at a superior level.

Why do some women need or want to have breast implants removed?

Women choose to have their breast implants removed and/or replaced for a number of reasons. These may include cosmetic dissatisfaction, complications with their breast implants, or health issues that develop after the implants are placed.

Cosmetic Dissatisfaction

Cosmetic dissatisfaction is the most common reason for having breast implants removed. Some women simply change their minds about the breast size they would like to have. Many decide to have their implants removed and return to their natural breast size.

Large breasts can cause pain and discomfort and be a hindrance for physically active women. They can lead to breast sagging in older women and make a woman appear heavier than she actually is.

Other women may want their implants removed and replaced with different implants. They may want to upsize or downsize, or change the type or placement of the implant for cosmetic reasons.

Breast Implant Complications

One of the most common complications with breast implants is capsular contracture. This is a condition in which scar tissue forms a tight, constricting capsule around the implant, causing it to become hard and misshapen. Treatment requires surgical removal and replacement of the implant.

In some cases, patients have an adverse reaction to the breast implant materials which leads to internal infection and bleeding. When infection occurs, it is vital to remove the breast implants.

Health Issues that Require Implant Removal

A diagnosis of breast cancer can make it necessary to remove implants as soon as possible. The detection of calcium deposits also requires that breast implants be removed.

For patients who wish to have their implants removed there are several options available to improve the shape of the remaining breast:

  • Repositioning the remaining tissues
  • Internal lifting and mesh suspension
  • Breast lift
  • Fat grafting
